Planescape: Torment is a role-playing video game released by Interplay Entertainment and developed by Black Isle Studios. The game, which was released for Microsoft Windows on December 12, 1999, takes place in the Planescape universe, a Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) fantasy campaign setting. The game’s technology is a modified version of BioWare’s Infinity Engine, which was utilized in the last D&D game set in the Forgotten Realms, Baldur’s Gate.
Planescape: Torment is mostly a story-driven game with little emphasis on fighting. The Nameless One, the protagonist, is an eternal man who forgets everything if he is murdered. The game follows him as he travels across the city of Sigil and other realms in order to retrieve his memories of prior lives and learn why he was made immortal in the first place. Several individuals in the game may accompany the Nameless One on his quest; the majority of these characters have met him before or have been impacted in some way by his activities.
Although the game was not a financial success, it earned positive critical reviews and has since become a cult classic. It was hailed as the finest role-playing video game of 1999 by video game reviewers for its engrossing dialogue, the dark and relatively unknown Planescape environment, and the protagonist’s distinctive identity, which eschewed many standard role-playing game features. It is widely regarded as one of the best video games of all time, and it has remained popular long after its debut. Beamdog created an updated version with modern platform advancements that was published in April 2017 for Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, and iOS, and in October 2019 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Planescape: Torment is based on BioWare’s Infinity Engine, which presents the player with a pre-rendered environment in an isometric viewpoint that is controlled by the player’s characters. The role-playing ruleset for the game is based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition rulebook. The player assumes the character of “The Nameless One” in Planescape: Torment, an immortal man with amnesia on a mission to discover why. Clicking on the ground to move or on items and characters to interact with them allows you to explore the painted landscape. Hotkeys, “fast slots,” and a radial menu can all be used to access items and spells. Magical tattoos, which may be placed to The Nameless One and other characters to improve their skills, are an alternative to armor.
The game starts with character creation, in which the player gives The Nameless One attributes including strength, intellect, and charm. The Nameless One begins the game as a warrior, but the player can switch to thief or wizard at any time. Throughout the game, the player can acquire buddies to join the group. There are seven possible companions, but only five can be with The Nameless One at any given moment. Conversation between party members is common, happening both at random and during talks with non-player characters. Many of the game’s combat encounters may be resolved or avoided through dialogue or stealth, and many of the game’s tasks can be finished or avoided by dialogue or stealth. The Nameless One keeps a diary, which aids in keeping track of the game’s many quests and subplots. Because The Nameless One is eternal, running out of life points generally results in nothing more than a respawn in a new place.
The D&D character alignment system is used in Planescape: Torment, and it determines a character’s ethical and moral worldview and philosophy based on the axes of “good vs. evil” and “law vs. chaos,” with neutrality spanning the two opposing sides. The Nameless One starts off as “true neutral” in Planescape: Torment, but his alignment can be modified over time based on the character’s actions, with non-player characters’ reactions varying depending on his alignment.
