A, or a, is the first letter and the first vowel of the modern English alphabet and the ISO basic Latin alphabet. Its name in Old English was ‘æsc’, meaning “ash tree” or “spear”.

It has since lost its letter case distinction in the Romance languages, but it remains distinct as both a capital letter and lower-case letter. This is similar to its original function for most of Latin-script based languages, on which all letters were either capital or lower case by default.

The name of A comes from Latin aleph, meaning “ox”. It is also the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet after א.

The Greek alphabet had an equivalent of the Latin letter A, but it was not used as the first letter of any word. This is because it had no sound value of its own and so cannot be classified as a consonant or vowel.
