I. Marlene King created the American adolescent drama mystery thriller television series Pretty Little Liars, which is partially based on Sara Shepard’s novel series of the same name. The sitcom depicts the lives of five closest friends whose clique disintegrates once its leader Alison vanishes. Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily are reunited a year later after receiving letters from a mysterious individual known only as “A” who threatens to reveal their greatest secrets.

Troian Bellisario as Spencer Hastings, Lucy Hale as Aria Montgomery, Ashley Benson as Hanna Marin, Shay Mitchell as Emily Fields, Sasha Pieterse as Alison DiLaurentis, and Janel Parrish as Mona Vanderwaal lead an ensemble cast in the series.

The show aired on Freeform on June 8, 2010 and concluded on June 27, 2017. On June 28, 2010, ABC Family ordered an extra 12 episodes after an original order of ten. The book series was expanded beyond the first eight volumes due to the ratings success of the first ten episodes.

An estimated 1.41 million people watched the series finale. It garnered the second-highest rating of any cable TV series that aired that night, although both reviewers and audiences were ambivalent about it.

It is the first of the Pretty Little Liars franchise’s two spin-offs, Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, both of which were cancelled after one season. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, a spin-off focusing on a fresh cast of characters in a different location, was given a series order by HBO Max in September 2020.

The series is set in the suburban town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania, and chronicles the lives of five high school students named Spencer Hastings, Alison DiLaurentis, Aria Montgomery, Hanna Marin, and Emily Fields, whose clique disintegrates after Alison, the group’s leader, goes missing.

One year later, the surviving estranged friends are reunited when they start getting messages from a mystery figure known only as “A” (and then “A.D.”), who threatens and tortures them for the mistakes and falsehoods they told before and after Alison’s murder. They initially believe it is Alison herself, but once her body is discovered, the girls understand it is someone else seeking vengeance, and they take on the task of figuring out who it is.

The premise was billed as “Desperate Housewives for adolescents” when it was first created as a television series by book packaging business Alloy Entertainment. Alloy met with novelist Shepard and given her the rights to turn the property into a series of books.

Pretty Little Liars was initially intended for The WB in 2005 with a different writer until the network shut down in early 2006 and was resurrected as The CW later that year, with Alloy and Warner Horizon Television interested in developing it as a television series for years.

HarperTeen published the first novel in October 2006. Alloy announced in June 2008 that it was producing a Pretty Little Liars television pilot for ABC Family, based on the novels. Filming for the rest of the series shifted to Los Angeles after the pilot was shot in Vancouver in December 2009.

The majority of the series was shot in Burbank, California, at the Warner Bros. studio and backlot. The series was chosen by lottery for a California film and television tax credit in June 2012.
