RAM is a short for “random access memory” and is usually calculated in megabytes. The RAM chip is a module that stores the information so that the processor can access it. It is faster than reading from a hard drive and provides easy access to recently saved data, information and files. This means that all programs must be running through RAM before they can be used.

There are two main types of RAM: dynamic and static.

Dynamic RAM

Dynamic RAM is called so because it must be constantly refreshed by the memory controller. The reason for the refreshing is because the capacitors that hold the information or data have an integrated leak that can only be stopped by updating the information thousands of times per second. This makes dynamic RAM slower and more cumbersome than static.

Static RAM

Static RAM is a type of RAM that has more memory because it uses capacitors instead of switches. However, static RAM is more expensive than dynamic RAM because it is faster and can contain more information.

Typically, extended versions of dynamic RAM are used in place of static RAM because of its high cost. These versions include FPM (Fast Page Mode), ECC (Error Correction Code), EDO (extended data output), and SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic RAM). ECC RAM is a special error-correcting memory commonly used on servers.

EDO RAM, or enhanced data output memory, is an improvement on traditional FPM RAM. Data can be read faster, and the time that the output is valid increases, which improves the coordination of time between the CPU and RAM, thereby improving performance.

RAM speed is measured in nanoseconds, and the less nanoseconds (ns), the faster the computer. Today we use computers of 50 ns, not 180 and 150 ns, which we have used over the past decade.
