Reebok International Limited is a British-American footwear and apparel company based in Bolton, Greater Manchester, Boston, Massachusetts, and headquartered both in the United Kingdom and the United States. Since 2005, the company has been a subsidiary of the German sporting goods giant Adidas. Reebok manufactures and distributes sportswear for fitness, running, and Crossfit, including apparel and footwear. It is the official sponsor of footwear and apparel for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), CrossFit, and Spartan Race.

In 1958, Reebok was founded as a J.W. Foster and Sons subsidiary, founded in 1895 in Bolton, Lancashire, England. From 1958 to 1986, the Union flag was featured on all Reebok clothing, indicating the company’s British origins.

The company is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, US, with regional offices in Amsterdam, Montreal, Hong Kong, and Mexico City.

In November 2016, Reebok announced that it was moving from the Boston suburb of Canton to the innovation and design at South Boston Harbor. The reasons for the move, the company said, were to be in an urban environment that is more desirable for millennial workers and to clarify the “roles” of US offices. The move was completed in the fall of 2018.

In 1895, at the age of 14, Joseph William Foster began working in his bedroom at his father’s sweet shop in Bolton, England and designed some of the first spiked sneakers. As his ideas developed, he founded his own business, J.W. Foster ‘in 1900; he later joined his sons and changed the company name to J.W. Foster and Sons. Foster opened a small factory called Olympic Works and gradually became famous among athletes for his “running pumps.” To pioneer the use of spikes, the company’s revolutionary pumps emerged in the book Golden Kicks: Shoes that changed the sport. The company began selling Union Jack footwear worn by British athletes. They are best known for the 100-meter Olympic champion Harold Abrahams (who will be immortalized in the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire) during the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris.

In 1958, in Bolton, the founder’s two grandchildren, Joe and Jeff Foster founded a companion company “Reebok, after finding a name in a South African dictionary that had run-winning Joe Foster as a boy. The name is Afrikaans for the gray Reebok a species of African antelope.

In 1979, at the Chicago International Sneaker Trade show, American businessman Paul Fireman took notice of Reebok. Fireman has worked in team sports and negotiated a deal in the process of licensing and distributing the Reebok brand in the United States. The division was called Reebok USA Ltd.
