Renault was the ninth-largest carmaker in the world by manufacturing volume in 2016, according to the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles. By 2017, the Renault–NissanMitsubishi Alliance had surpassed Toyota as the world’s largest light car seller.

The Renault group is made up of the eponymous Renault marque and subsidiaries, Alpine, Renault Sport (Gordini), Automobile Dacia from Romania, Renault Samsung Motors from South Korea, and AvtoVAZ from Russia. The Renault group is headquartered in Boulogne-Billancourt, near Paris.

Renault owns a 43.4 percent interest in Nissan of Japan and a 1.55 percent investment in Daimler AG of Germany (Renault has been producing engines for Daimler’s Mercedes A- and B-Class automobiles since 2012). RCI Banque (automotive finance), Renault Retail Group (automotive distribution), and Motrio are all subsidiaries of Renault (automotive parts).

Renault is involved in several joint ventures, including Oyak-Renault in Turkey and Renault Pars in France (Iran). Renault is owned by the French government, which controls 15% of the company.

Renault is well-known for its involvement in motorsport, especially rallying, Formula One, and Formula E. In the history of computer graphics, its early work on mathematical curve modeling for automobile bodywork is significant.

Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand formed the Renault business on February 25, 1899, as Société Renault Frères. Louis was a brilliant, ambitious young engineer who had already developed and produced numerous prototypes before joining forces with his brothers, who had refined their business abilities working for their father’s textile company. While Louis was in charge of design and manufacturing, Marcel and Fernand were in charge of the company.

On December 24, 1898, the first Renault automobile, the Renault Voiturette 1CV, was sold to a friend of Louis’ father following a test drive.

Renault began producing its engines in 1903, having previously acquired them from De Dion-Bouton. The first large-scale sale occurred in 1905 when Société des Automobiles de Place purchased Renault AG1 vehicles to start a taxi business. During World War I, the French military utilized these vehicles to carry troops, earning them the moniker “Taxi de la Marne.”

Renault had produced a substantial percentage of London and Paris cabs by 1907. In 1907 and 1908, Renault was the best-selling foreign brand in New York. The firm manufactured 3,575 cars in 1908, making it the country’s largest automaker.

The brothers understood the importance of exposure that participating in motor racing might bring to their automobiles. Renault earned a name for itself by winning the first city-to-city races in Switzerland, which resulted in significant sales development.

Both Louis and Marcel competed for the same business, but Marcel died in a car accident during the 1903 Paris-Madrid race. Even though Louis never raced again, his business remained active in motor racing, with Ferenc Szisz winning the inaugural Grand Prix in a Renault AK 90CV in 1906.
