Rovio Mobile developed and distributed Angry Birds Rio, the third puzzle video game in the Angry Birds series. Angry Birds Rio was launched in March 2011 for devices running Apple’s iOS and Mac OS X, as well as Google’s Android. The game was published as a marketing tie-in with the animated films Rio and Rio 2 from 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios, and it was promoted alongside both films.

While maintaining the core gameplay of the original game, Angry Birds Rio included a lot of new features, the most notable of which was the introduction of boss levels. Angry Birds Rio, as well as Angry Birds Star Wars and Angry Birds Star Wars II, were cancelled on February 3, 2020.

The Smugglers have kidnapped Red, Chuck, and the Blues and transported them to Rio on the instructions of an evil cockatoo named Nigel. Players use a slingshot to hurl the birds at adjacent structures in the same way they did in the original Angry Birds, with the goal of hitting objectives on or within them.

Instead of rescuing trapped exotic birds or defeating Nigel’s marmosets, players must now beat Nigel’s marmosets, depending on the level. Several characters from Rio make cameo appearances due to the game’s location. Along with all of the previous birds from the series, this game introduces two new bird types: Blu and Jewel.

The game also features the series’ first boss fights, in which the player employs the birds to beat Nigel, the film’s major adversary, as well as Mauro, the marmosets’ commander. Luiz assists the player in defeating the marmosets and destroys materials and blocks to get extra points and secret goodies as the player continues through the game.

Smugglers’ Den and Jungle Escape were the first two chapters of Angry Birds Rio, each with 30 levels. Since then, the game has been updated with three new 30-level chapters: “Beach Volley” (May 2011), “Carnival Upheaval” (June 2011), and “Airfield Chase” (August 2011), as well as a 15-level chapter called “Golden Beachball,” which can be unlocked by finding a hidden item in “Beach Volley” (iOS, Android) or entering a redeem code from the Rio DVD (PC, Mac).

The last chapter, “Smugglers’ Plane,” was released in November 2011 with 15 levels at first, with the remaining 15 levels released later (January 2012). Each chapter contains a unique fruit that is only found as gold on rare occasions.

Pineapples are in “Smugglers’ Den,” bananas are in “Jungle Escape,” watermelons are in “Beach Volley,” papayas are in “Carnival Upheaval,” apples are in “Airfield Chase,” mangoes are in “Smugglers’ Plane,” strawberries are in “Market Mayhem,” and golden rockets are in “Rocket Rumble.” The “Golden Beachball” episode gained 15 new levels, golden cherries, and a new backdrop in July 2013, and it is now available right at the beginning of the game.

The Trophy Room upgrade was released in March 2012, and it included 12 new levels that are unlocked when a player completes a chapter or collects all 15 of a certain golden fruit. Before finding its way to iOS, this update was initially published on Android (Amazon Appstore ad-free).

A new version for iOS and Android was released on December 18, 2012, which added 24 additional levels. This level is obtained by earning 30 to 70 stars on each episode or ten Mighty Eagles’ Feathers on each episode (4 extra levels on each episode). Power-Ups were also introduced in this episode.

The Power-Ups included Super Seeds and Sling Scope from the original Angry Birds app, as well as two new ones (Samba Burst and TNT Drop, which this has been seen on a previous Angry Birds Friends Christmas Tournament).

A new update was published on March 11, 2013, which included a “Market Mayhem” episode with 34 levels (3 stars levels and 1 Mighty Eagle level). Golden Beachball received a golden fruit and 15 new levels on July 25, 2013, and AB Rio’s app icon was modified.

Furthermore, the trophy room levels were merged with the episode from whence they were achieved.
