A roadster (spider or spyder) is an open two-seater car with an emphasis on sporty appearance or character. Initially an American term for a two-seater without protection from weathering, the use of this vehicle has spread internationally and has been evolved to include two-seat convertibles.

The Roadster was also a racing car that took place in United States Auto Club (USAC), including Indianapolis 500, in the 1950s and 1960s. This type of racing car was replaced by medium-sized engines.

An early roadster competes for the Vanderbilt Cup. In the 19th century in the United States, the word “roadster” denoted a horse suitable for travel. By the end of the century, the definition was expanded, including bicycles and tricycles.

In 1916, U.S.’s Society of Automobile Engineers defined the roadster as “an open two- or three-seater car that could have additional seats on running boards or in rear deck. The roadster usually had a hooded dashboard.

The term “roadster”, which applies to cars, is of American origin; Before and after World War II, the British equivalent was an “open two-seater”. The description was often used after World War II for British cars targeting the North American market.
