A rock band or pop band is a small musical ensemble performing rock music, pop music, or another related genre. A four-piece band is the most common configuration in rock and pop music. In the early years, the configuration usually consisted of two guitarists (lead guitarist and rhythm guitarist, with one of them singing lead vocals), bassist and drummer (for example, The Beatles, KISS, and Metallica). Another common line-up is a vocalist who doesn’t play an instrument, an electric guitarist, a bass guitarist, and a drummer (e.g., Who, Monkees, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and U2). Instrumentally, these bands can be thought of as trios. Sometimes, in addition to the electric guitar, electric bass, and drums, a keyboard player (especially a pianist) plays.

Two-person rock and pop bands (such as The White Stripes, Tenacious D, and The Black Keys) are relatively rare due to the difficulty of providing all the musical elements that are part of a rock or pop sound (vocals, chords accompaniment, bass lines, drumming or percussion). In two-person rock and pop bands, one of these musical elements is usually missing. In many cases, two-piece orchestras skip the drummer as guitars, bass guitars, and keyboards can be used to provide rhythmic momentum.

Other examples of two-person bands include Pet Shop Boys, Hella, Flight of the Conchords, Ting Tings, Hall & Oates, Twenty One Pilots, and T. Rex (while they expanded to four-piece soon after their UK breakout).

When electronic sequencers became widely available in the 1980s, they made it easy to perform by adding musical elements to two-part bands. The sequencers allowed the bands to program certain performance elements, such as the electronic drum section and the synth bassline. Two-person pop groups such as Soft Cell, Blancmange, and Yazoo used programming sequencers. Other 80s pop bands that supposedly played with two artists, such as Wham !, Eurythmics, and Tears for Fears, are not actually two-part ensembles because other instrumental musicians were used behind the scenes to fill the sound. Contemporary bands using this format include Ninja Sex Party and Death Grips.

Two-part bands are rare in rock music. However, since the 2000s, blues-influenced rock bands such as the White Stripes and Black Keys have used a guitar and drum scheme. Death from Above 1979 features a drummer and bass guitarist. Tenacious D – a band with two guitars, One Day as a Lion and the Dresden dolls, they have both a keyboard player and a drummer. Ratatat features a band with two guitars that use a drum machine for beats.
