Bentancur was a member of Tabárez’s final 23-man Uruguay squad for the 2019 Copa América in Brazil in March 2019. After ordinary time ended with a 0-0 tie in the quarterfinal match against Peru on June 29, the game went to a penalty shootout; despite Bentancur’s successful kick, Uruguay lost the shootout 4-5 and were eliminated from the competition.

Style Of Play

Bentancur has been described as a tall and “physically strong” player who is capable of playing in any midfield position, including as a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, a winger on either flank, in a box-to-box role, or even as a mezzala, or as an attacking midfielder behind the forwards, due to his ability to make attacking runs from either foot. Bentancur is dynamic, hard-working, skillful, elegant,

While in possession, he also has good close control, technique, and quick footwork that help him get past opponents. In addition, he has vision, intelligence, personality, and incisive passing that help him set the pace of his team’s play as a regista deep in the middle of the field and help his teammates score goals after winning the ball back. He has even occasionally played as a second striker thanks to his height and muscular body, which also allow him to serve as a “target man” in an advanced midfield position.

He is a mobile player who is capable of pressuring opponents further up the field, despite his unimpressive acceleration. Additionally, he has received media acclaim for his poise and quick thinking both with and without the ball. He is regarded as a very promising young player in the media because of his precociousness, talent, maturity, and wide range of skills.
