In Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mauritius, Seychelles, and previously in India, the rupee symbol is used to signify the monetary unit of account. It resembles, and is frequently written as, the Latin character sequence “Rs,” of which it is an orthographic ligature (as a single character).

Between the rupee sign and the numbers representing the amount, a punctuation mark is commonly used, such as “Re: 1” (for one unit) or “Rs. 140.” (for more than one rupee).

India established a new currency symbol, the Indian rupee sign, on July 15, 2010. This symbol is made up of the Devanagari letter (ra) and the Latin capital R (without the vertical bar) (similar to the R rotunda).
