Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers, and Robbers (S.T.A.L.K.E.R.) is a series of first-person shooter video games created by GSC Game World for Microsoft Windows. The games are set in the Zone, the area around the Chernobyl catastrophe site, in an alternate world in which a second explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant happens twenty years after the first, causing unusual alterations in the surrounding environment.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are set in the Zone, an alternate history version of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, and are largely based on the novel Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky and Andrei Tarkovsky’s film of the same name, Stalker. Experimental labs were built in the Exclusion Zone in the games’ universe, allowing scientists to experiment with psychic powers that developed as a result of the tragedy.

Their experiments culminated in a second calamity, triggering physical and climatic abnormalities as well as the mutation of wild animals and some people throughout the Zone. Anomalies abound in the Zone, dangerous occurrences that appear to defy physics and have a variety of repercussions on any thing that enters them.

Anomalies frequently create artefacts, which are things with unique physical features such as anti-gravity or the ability to absorb radiation. Stalkers enter the Zone with the aim of locating such goods for personal financial benefit. While many stalkers work alone, the Zone is home to a variety of groups, each with its own ideologies and objectives.

The Duty group, for example, believes that the Zone is the biggest threat to mankind on the planet and is determined to destroy it by any means necessary; the Freedom faction, on the other hand, believes that the Zone should be open to everybody.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces maintain a perimeter around the Zone, aiming to keep unauthorised persons out. Ukrainian Spetsnaz forces also execute special operations within the Zone on a regular basis, such as surgical attacks on stalkers or securing specific objectives. Humans and other species mutated as a result of the two disasters, many of whom have aggressive psychic powers, are among the Zone’s other hostile beings.

Each game’s protagonists have their own aims that are distinct from those of the various factions, yet they are given the opportunity to assist in the schemes of others. In general, each game’s ultimate goal is to reach the Zone’s centre, a job made more difficult by the many dangers and hazards that exist there.

In the first game in the series, the player assumes the character of the “Marked One,” an amnesiac stalker charged with killing another stalker named Strelok. The protagonist finds clues about his history and real identity throughout the game while assisting other stalkers and combating the Zone’s mutant monsters.

There are seven different endings in Shadow of Chernobyl. These endings are determined by a variety of circumstances, including the amount of money gained during the game, whether or not the protagonist supported specific groups, and how much of the protagonist’s memories was put together.
