Woodley was subsequently hired as Amy Juergens, a 15-year-old girl who discovers she is pregnant, in the ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008″2013). The show delves into her pregnancy’s consequences on her family, friends, and herself, as well as her life at Grant High School.

“Lifts a well-meaning, quite bold, but rickety production a notch,” Entertainment Weekly’s Ken Tucker said of her performance. During its five-season run, which spanned over 121 episodes, the show became one of ABC Family’s most-watched telecasts.

Woodley made her feature film debut in 2011 with The Descendants, in which she portrayed Alex, Matt King’s problematic elder daughter (played by George Clooney). Her performance was well-received by the critics. “Ms. Woodley gave one of the harshest, brightest, most convincing teenage performances in recent memory,” observed A. O. Scott of The New York Times. Variety’s Peter Debruge called her performance a “surprise” and stated she “displayed both the sharpness and depth the job needs” in the character of Alex.

Woodley was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for her performance. On January 18, 2013, the film had its world debut at Sundance. Critics praised her portrayal of Aimee; Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times wrote that Woodley and Teller “bring such an authentic face of confidence and questioning, indifference and need, pain and denial, friendship and first love,” while another critic from The Guardian said that they gave “remarkably strong performances” that “display a depth of feeling that’s breathtaking in its simplicity and honesty.”

Woodley also earned a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where she won the Special Jury Award for Acting with Teller.
