Woodley was born in San Bernardino, California, and reared in Simi Valley, where she began modeling and acting professionally in modest television parts at the age of four. She rose to notoriety after acting in the ABC Family drama series The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008″2013) as Amy Juergens.

Woodley made her cinematic debut in 2011 with The Descendants, and then went on to feature in The Spectacular Now, a coming-of-age picture (2013). She got a Cannes Trophée Chopard as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress ” Motion Picture for the former, and a special jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival for the latter.

She rose to prominence after acting in the romantic film The Fault in Our Stars (2014) and the science-fiction series The Divergent Series (2014″2016) as Beatrice Prior, a young cancer sufferer. She starred as a sexual assault survivor in the HBO drama series Big Little Lies from 2017 to 2019, for which she received Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. She featured in The Mauritanian and The Fallout, both critically praised drama films, in 2021.

In 1999, Woodley made her acting debut in the television film Replacing Dad, in which she had a tiny role. She went on to appear in minor television parts in The District and Crossing Jordan (in the latter, she played a 10-year-old version of the titular character played by Jill Hennessy). She was nominated for a Young Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actress in a TV Movie, Miniseries, or Special for her portrayal as California Ford in the television film A Place Called Home (2004).

She also played young Kaitlin Cooper in The O.C. and Felicity Merriman in the television movie Felicity: An American Girl Adventure (2005). Her performance was nominated for a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie, Miniseries, or Special for the second time (Comedy or Drama). Following that, Woodley participated in a number of guest parts on television shows such as Everybody Loves Raymond, My Name is Earl, CSI: NY, Close to Home, and Cold Case, among others.

Woodley was subsequently hired as Amy Juergens, a 15-year-old girl who discovers she is pregnant, in the ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008″2013). The show delves into her pregnancy’s consequences on her family, friends, and herself, as well as her life at Grant High School.

“Lifts a well-meaning, quite bold, but rickety production a notch,” Entertainment Weekly’s Ken Tucker said of her performance. During its five-season run, which spanned over 121 episodes, the show became one of ABC Family’s most-watched telecasts.

Woodley made her feature film debut in 2011 with The Descendants, in which she portrayed Alex, Matt King’s problematic elder daughter (played by George Clooney). Her performance was well-received by the critics. “Ms. Woodley gave one of the harshest, brightest, most convincing teenage performances in recent memory,” observed A. O. Scott of The New York Times. Variety’s Peter Debruge called her performance a “surprise” and stated she “displayed both the sharpness and depth the job needs” in the character of Alex.

Woodley was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for her performance. She was selected one of the “Most Beautiful at Every Age” in 2012. Nylon’s “Young Hollywood Issue” named Woodley as one of the “55 Faces of the Future.”

On January 18, 2013, the film had its world debut at Sundance. Critics praised her portrayal of Aimee; Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times wrote that Woodley and Teller “bring such an authentic face of confidence and questioning, indifference and need, pain and denial, friendship and first love,” while another critic from The Guardian said that they gave “remarkably strong performances” that “display a depth of feeling that’s breathtaking in its simplicity and honesty.”

Woodley also earned a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where she won the Special Jury Award for Acting with Teller.
