Nakamura joined NJPW in March 2002 and soon began to name himself as a bright outlook for the company. Having earned the nickname “Super Rookie,” Nakamura was impressed by both NJPW’s officers and fans with an excellent combination of strength, speed, and technology. Along with fellow rookies, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Katsuyori Shibata, Nakamura has become known as one of the “New Three Musketeers.” Nakamura began training valley martial arts and debuted mixed martial arts in battle on December 31. There he was defeated by Daniel Gracie for submission to an armlock. Nakamura’s second MMA fight took place on May 2, 2003, when he defeated Jan Nortje with a guillotine choke. He followed it with another submission victory over Shane Eitner in the third MMA battle on September 13.

On December 9, Nakamura defeated Hiroyoshi Tenyama at the IWGP Heavyweight Championships and became the youngest wrestler in history to win the title. On January 4, 2004, at Wrestling World 2004, Nakamura successfully defended the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against NWF Heavyweight Champion Yoshihiro Takayama in a claim unified match. However, Nakamura was injured only a month later, forcing him to vacate the title.

After returning, Nakamura received a shot under the title, currently held by Bob Sapp, but lost to the defending champion on May 3. May 22. On December 11, Nakamura and his tag team partner Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Kensuke Sasaki and Minoru Suzuki in the final of the IWGP Tag Team Championship. At the Toukon Festival: Wrestling World 2005, January 4, 2005, Nakamura defeated his tag team partner and won the IWGP U-30 Openweight Championship. During the Tag Team title reign, the left for on an excursion to Mexico, where they feuded with Los Guerreros del Infierno and defending the IWGP Tag Team Championship against Rey Bucanero and Olimpico. On October 30, they lost the IWGP Tag Team Championship to Cho-Ten (Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Masahiro Chono).

Excursions And Returns (2006–2009)

Nakamura challenged Brock Lesnar of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in Toukon Shidou Chapter 1 on January 4, 2006, but he lost. In March 2006, Nakamura announced that he would leave on a learning excursion to further improve his wrestling skills. Among other things, he traveled to Mexico, Brazil, and Russia and trained with Lesner at Lesnar’s gym to increase muscle mass.
