Sonny John Moore (born January 15, 1988) is a DJ, record producer, musician, vocalist, and songwriter from the United States. He grew up in Northeast Los Angeles and Northern California, and in 2004, he became the lead singer of the American post-hardcore band From First to Last, with whom he recorded two studio albums (Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count, 2004, and Heroine, 2006) before leaving to pursue a solo career in 2007. In late 2007, he embarked on his first solo tour. Moore joined the Alternative Press Tour to support bands like All Time Low and The Rocket Summer, and he was featured on the cover of Alternative Press’ annual “100 Bands You Need to Know” edition after forming a new band lineup.

Moore was set to make his debut studio album, Bells, with producer Noah Shain after releasing the Gypsyhook EP in 2009. However, he stopped working on the album and began performing as Skrillex, giving away the My Name Is Skrillex EP for free on his official MySpace website. He followed up with the Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP in late 2010 and the More Monsters and Sprites EP in mid-2011, all of which were moderate financial hits. He earned five Grammy Award nominations, including Best New Artist, at the 54th Grammy Awards on November 30, 2011, and won three: “Best Dance/Electronica Album,” “Best Dance Recording,” and “Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.” The BBC announced on December 5, 2011, that he had been nominated for the Sound of 2012 poll. He was also named MTV’s Electronic Dance Music Artist of the Year on December 12, 2011.

Skrillex has earned the most Grammy Awards of any electronic dance music artist, with eight. Skrillex has formed the ensembles Jack Ü and Dog Blood alongside Diplo and Boys Noize, respectively. Moore reunited with From First to Last and released a single called “Make War” on his 29th birthday. Incubus’ eighth studio album, 8, was produced and mixed by Skrillex in 2017. Skrillex released a new track in July 2017 with emerging solo artist Poo Bear.

Moore was born in the Highland Park area of Northeast Los Angeles but was moved to the Forest Hill section of San Francisco when he was two years old. Moore attended a boarding school in the Mojave Desert LV when he was 9 and 10 but later returned to Northern California. His parents were also Scientologists.

He was adopted at infancy by family friends of his biological parents and did not learn about it until he was fifteen years old.

His family returned to his birthplace in Northeast Los Angeles when he was 12 years old. He enrolled at a private academy school specializing in the arts, where he was taught by L. Ron Hubbard. Due to bullying, he was homeschooled at the age of 14.

He found out he was adopted in 2004 and dropped out of the program when he was 16 years old. Moore used to go to punk shows in Mexican American communities in East and South Los Angeles as a youngster and subsequently to electro club parties in the downtown Silver Lake and Echo Park neighborhoods.
