Hi-Rez Studios developed and released Smite, a free-to-play third-person multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. In Smite, players take control of a god, goddess, or other mythological character and fight alongside other player-controlled gods and non-player-controlled minions in team-based warfare.

Multiple player versus player (PVP) modes, numerous playable characters, and a thriving esports culture with multiple events, including the yearly million-dollar Smite World Championship, are all features of the game.

Smite has a variety of game types, the most popular of which being Conquest. Members are divided into two teams, each with five players. At their team’s “fountain,” all players start on opposing ends of the map. Before entering the map, the players are given a certain amount of gold to spend on starter goods. These things provide exceptional perks or powers that improve the god of the player. From one side of the map to the other, there are three continuous “lanes.” Each lane is guarded by a “Phoenix,” who is joined by two other defensive towers. Any adversaries that go too close to phoenixes and towers take a lot of damage. Each game’s purpose is to kill the enemy team’s Phoenixes as well as the Titan, a massive warrior who must be destroyed in order to win. “Minions,” little troops with a feeble assault, accompany the players. Every thirty seconds, these minions spawn at the Phoenixes and run along their lane until they encounter opposition, at which point they attack instantly. Archers will attack towers, Phoenixes, and the Titan in addition to players and other minions. In reality, players must have them present in order to fully harm these goals. Enemy minions will be prioritized above people in defensive positions, allowing them to attack a tower without taking damage. If there are no minions nearby or if the player fights an enemy player under their tower, the tower will fire. If a team’s game is going badly, they can elect to surrender after at least 10 minutes, however this needs a majority of the team (4 players to 1) to agree.

Players must pick a deity or other person to play as in each game. Players may currently pick from a wide range of characters from several pantheons, such as Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Hindu, Japanese, Norse, Slavic, and Yoruba. Each character belongs to one of the following groups: Assassin, Guardian, Hunter, Mage, or Warrior are some of the options. Two players on the same squad cannot choose the same character unless otherwise noted (in competitive modes and those using a Draft pick method, each player must use a different character). The player controls the deity from a third-person perspective, which distinguishes this MOBA from others in the genre, which are usually played from a top-down perspective. Each god has a basic attack, a passive characteristic, and four abilities with different effects including area damage, crowd control, buffs, and more. These skills are learned and enhanced when the player’s character levels up through experience gained from killing minions, bringing down towers or phoenixes, and fighting opposing characters. The highest level is 20, and each subsequent level becomes increasingly difficult to achieve. Gold (used to buy goods that improve power, defense, and passive benefits, as well as potions, wards, and abilities) is earned by slaughtering foes (both player and NPC) or selling owned items on a regular basis.

The “jungle” is the huge region between the lanes where computer-controlled creatures such as packs of cyclopes or Furies (the latter sometimes known as harpies) spawn at certain spots scattered symmetrically over the map on a regular basis. Killing some monsters in the jungle causes a “buff” to fall to the ground, where it may be picked up by a player, which grants boosts to stats such as damage dealt, movement speed, and attack speed, depending on the kind of monster slain. While slain, three special neutral monsters come less frequently and provide the entire team a significant damage buff for a medium amount of time, a fixed amount of Gold, and a speed boost when exiting the base, respectively. There are also monsters that provide merely experience and gold rather than a boost.
