SoundCloud, located in Berlin, Germany, is a Swedish-founded online audio distribution platform and music sharing website that allows users to post, advertise, and share audio, as well as a digital signal processor that allows listeners to stream audio. SoundCloud, founded in 2007 by Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss, has evolved to become one of the most popular music streaming platforms. SoundCloud is a platform that offers both free and paid membership options for desktop and mobile devices.

The success of many musicians who have utilized SoundCloud to begin or progress their careers has had an impact on the music business. Many investors and other media platforms, such as Twitter, have backed SoundCloud, despite the streaming platform’s unresolved funding issues and the termination of many staff to stay profitable.

Swedish sound designer Alexander Ljung and Swedish electronic musician Eric Wahlforss founded SoundCloud in Berlin in August 2007, and the website went live in October 2008. It was created to help artists cooperate by allowing them to share and discuss recordings, but it has now evolved into a publishing platform for music distribution. SoundCloud began to challenge Myspace’s supremacy as a venue for musicians to share their music immediately after its launch, according to Wired magazine.

Doughty Hanson Technology Ventures gave SoundCloud €2.5 million in Series A investment in April 2009. SoundCloud stated in May 2010 that it has one million users. SoundCloud was rumored to have secured $10 million in Series B investment from Union Square Ventures and Index Ventures in January 2011. SoundCloud announced five million registered users and investments from Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary’s A-Grade Fund on June 15, 2011, and ten million registered users on January 23, 2012. SoundCloud had 15 million users in May 2012, and the site’s usage was growing at a rate of 1.5 million per month.

In December 2012, a new APN was launched that enhanced mobile device compatibility and introduced features including simultaneous listening, site navigation, and the ability to build personal collections. Users’ reactions were varied, with many expressing unhappiness with the move. SoundCloud was said to be “reaching 180 million people each month” at the time, with 10 hours of content uploaded per minute.

Twitter announced in March 2014 that it will collaborate with SoundCloud to create its first integrated music app. However, owing to a lack of essential arrangements with music labels, SoundCloud was unable to handle licensed music, and the project was never completed. SoundCloud has 40 million registered users in July 2013, and new users were joining at a rate of 20 million each month.

In January 2014, SoundCloud stated that it has begun licensing agreements with major music labels to address the issue of unlicensed, copyrighted content appearing on the site on a regular basis. The announcement came after a $60 million round of investment, giving the company a $700 million valuation. According to media reports, the talks were started in order to avoid issues similar to those experienced by Google, which had to deal with a significant number of takedown requests on its YouTube video-sharing site.
