Isuna Hasekura’s Spice and is a Japanese light book series with J Ayakura’s drawings. Since February 2006, ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Bunko imprint has released 22 books. According to ASCII Media Works, the first nine books had sold over 2.2 million copies in Japan as of October 2008. Mainichi Shimbun dubbed the series a “strange fantasy” since the storyline focuses on business, commerce, and peddling rather than the conventional fantasy mainstays of swords and magic. The light novels have been licensed by Yen Press and will be released in English in North America. Since September 2016, ASCII Media Works has published five volumes of a spin-off light novel series called Wolf and Parchment.

In the November 2007 issue of ASCII Media Works’ seinen manga magazine Dengeki Maoh, a manga adaptation illustrated by Keito Koume began publishing. Yen Press was given the rights to the manga and has began publishing the volumes in English. Between January and March 2008, a 12-episode anime adaptation aired, as well as a single original video animation (OVA) episode in May 2008. In April 2009, a second OVA was published as a prelude to Spice and Wolf II, the second anime season, which aired 12 episodes between July and September 2009. Kadokawa Pictures USA and Funimation published both anime seasons in English. ASCII Media Works produced two visual novels based on the series for the Nintendo DS in June 2008 and September 2009.

Holo is a wolf harvest deity that hails from Yoitsu, a country in the north that bears resemblance to the fabled kingdom of Hyperborea. She promised residents of the town of Pasloe that she would assure the town’s wheat harvests will be good year after year. The locals, on the other hand, gradually began to abandon Holo, viewing her as useless, and disliked the periodic dismal harvests that Holo said were essential to rest the land. As a result, Holo flees town in Lawrence’s wagon and joins him on his journey to discover how much the world has changed since she left Pasloe. Holo has taken on the appearance of a 15-year-old girl, retaining her huge white-tipped wolf tail, ears, and two sharp fangs. She has the ability to make an ear-shattering howl at times. Many people dreaded her actual shape, which is that of a very enormous wolf.

In episode 1, she seems to be around 30 feet tall from the ground to her shoulders, while in episode 6, she appears to be about 10 feet tall in the sewer. She is enormous enough to carry Lawrence like a horse and leap the walls of Ruvinheigen easily in the novels, yet she is also small enough to fit in Hans Remelio’s office with Remelio and Lawrence. She has a strange manner of speaking in human form, based after the oiran high-class courtesans. As a wolf, she can communicate with humans. Holo enjoys good cuisine and alcoholic beverages, but she is always on the lookout for something new in each story. It’s apples in volume one. Apples preserved in honey are featured in volume 2. It’s eel in volume three (i.e. lamprey). She is proud of her tail and takes great care of it, combing and maintaining it on a regular basis. It is described as dangling beyond the back of her knees on page 65 of the text. It’s longer in the anime and nearly touches her ankles.

Holo refers to herself as “Holo The Wise Wolf” (, Yoitsu no Kenr, Yoitsu’s Wise Wolf). She is normally arrogant and self-sufficient, but her solitude in Pasloe for hundreds of years has caused her to become more lonely, and she occasionally displays a more vulnerable side. She relies on Lawrence for company because she is afraid of loneliness, something Lawrence is well aware of and attempts to alleviate in his own manner. Holo is also acutely aware of the chronological differences between herself and Lawrence, as a human lifespan is a mere blink of an eye for her species. Holo is terrified of this reality, but he manages to cover it with jokes. Despite her initial sarcasm about her feelings for Lawrence, she gradually but steadily falls in love with him. Holo marries Lawrence towards the conclusion of the story, and they produce a daughter, Myuri, who inherited her mother’s characteristics and is the protagonist of the sequel light novel Wolf and Parchment.
