A steam mop is a mop that cleans floors and carpets using steam. Unlike a normal mop, which employs cleaning chemicals like bleach or detergent to disinfect the floors, a steam mop uses steam to disinfect the floors. To capture dirt, a microfibre pad is frequently put directly beneath the steam jet. The majority of steam mops have a tiny water tank and produce dry steam.

Romi Haan, a South Korean designer, came up with the idea for the steam mop in 1998. In 2001, she created a prototype, and the steam mop was released to the general public in 2004.

The water inside the reservoir of a steam mop is heated to temperatures of around 120 degrees Celsius (248 degrees Fahrenheit). Many steam mops contain a single jet of dry steam (but others have up to 15 jets), which moistens a microfibre pad below. The steam aids in the soaking of the pad and the removal of dirt from the ground. Steam mops, unlike normal mops, do not leave a residue on the floor and may frequently clean through filth. The steam’s heat is capable of killing 99 percent of germs and dust mites. Steam mops can disinfect, shine, kill dust mites, and remove certain stains from floors.

Some steam mops include a two-sided flip mop head that allows you to clean twice as much floor before having to change the mop pad. One pad is gentle enough to be used on fragile floors like hardwood and laminate. The other pad has scrubbing strips built in to help clear up stubborn messes.

While steam mops have their benefits, the heat from the steam may quickly scorch flesh, posing a safety risk.
