A walking stick or walking cane is a device that is generally used to facilitate walking, give postural stability or support, or assist in keeping excellent posture; however, some designs can also be employed as a fashion item or for self-defense.

Walking sticks exist in a variety of forms and sizes, and some have even become collectibles. Some walking sticks can be used as crutches by people with impairments. The walking stick has been employed as a defensive or offensive weapon in the past, and it may conceal a knife or sword — as in a swordstick.

Hikers use walking sticks, also known as trekking poles, pilgrim’s staff, hiking poles, or hiking sticks, for various reasons, including emptying spider webs or parting thick bushes or grass that are obstructing their path. A walking stick can be made from nearby felled wood. More elaborate sticks are produced for serious hikers, typically with tiny baubles or medallions symbolizing a “conquered” area. Outdoor activities, healthful upper-body training, and even club, department, and family monuments all employ wooden walking sticks. They may be manufactured from various woods and personalized in a variety of ways for the owner.

A rabologist is a person who collects walking sticks.

A sturdy rigid stick replaced the sword as an essential element of the European gentleman’s wardrobe during the 17th or 18th century, particularly as a walking staff. It continued to perform some of the functions of the sword as a weapon, in addition to its importance as a decorative item. Rattan with a rounded metal handle was the typical cane. The cloudy cane was constructed of malacca (rattan stems) and had a weathered appearance:

The tension on the knees, hips, and back is drastically reduced while walking with two poles of the proper length.
