SpongeBob SquarePants is a Nickelodeon animated comedy television series developed by Stephen Hillenburg, a marine science instructor and animator. The series follows the exploits of the main character and his aquatic companions in Bikini Bottom, a fictitious underwater metropolis. Its enormous popularity has turned it into a media franchise, since it is the fifth-longest-running American animated series. It is Nickelodeon’s highest-rated series, as well as ViacomCBS Consumer Products’ most successful franchise, having earned over $13 billion in merchandise revenue as of 2019.

Many of the series’ concepts came from Hillenburg’s unpublished educational book The Intertidal Zone, which he wrote in 1989 to teach his students about undersea life. In 1996, he began developing SpongeBob SquarePants as a television series, and in 1997, he pitched a seven-minute pilot to Nickelodeon. The network executives wanted SpongeBob to be a school-aged youngster, while Hillenburg wanted him to be an adult. He was ready to “walk out” on Nickelodeon and discontinue the show, but he came up with a solution in the form of Mrs. Puff and her boating school, allowing SpongeBob to go to school as an adult.

After the 1999 Kids’ Choice Awards, Nickelodeon aired a preview for the series in the United States on May 1, 1999. On July 17, 1999, the series aired for the first time. Since its launch, it has earned widespread critical praise, and by the second season, it had amassed great popularity. In October 2020, the thirteenth season premiered. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie was released in 2004, Sponge Out of Water was released in 2015, and Sponge on the Run will be released in 2020. In 2021, two spin-off programs debuted: Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years and The Patrick Star Show. As of 2020, a second spin-off, an unnamed project based on the character Squidward Tentacles, is in the works.

Six Annie Awards, eight Golden Reel Awards, four Emmy Awards, 18 Kids’ Choice Awards, and two BAFTA Children’s Awards have all been given to SpongeBob SquarePants. In 2017, a Broadway musical based on the show premiered to great acclaim.

The series is set mostly in Bikini Bottom, a fictitious benthic underwater metropolis in the Pacific Ocean under the real-life coral reef of Bikini Atoll. Its inhabitants are largely colorful fish that dwell in houses constructed from ship funnels and travel in “boatmobiles,” which are hybrids of vehicles and boats. The neighboring houses of SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward; two competing restaurants, the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket; Mrs. Puff’s Boating School, which includes a driving course and a sunken lighthouse; the Treedome, an oxygenated glass enclosure where Sandy lives; Shady Shoals Rest HomeJellyfish Fields, a seagrass meadow; and Goo Lagoon, a subaqueous brine

When the SpongeBob crew began work on the series’ pilot episode, they were entrusted with creating stock settings, such as the Krusty Krab and SpongeBob’s pineapple house, that would be used regularly. The crew employed rope, wooden planks, ships’ wheels, nets, anchors, boilerplates, and rivets to create the show’s environment, with the goal of “keeping everything nautical.” The sound of running water accompanies the transitions between scenes, which are signaled by bubbles filling the screen.

The major setting material in the series is “sky flowers.” When asked what they were, series backdrop designer Kenny Pittenger replied, “They act like clouds in certain ways, but they aren’t true clouds because the program takes place underwater. The backdrop painters utilize a lot of pattern because of the show’s tiki inspiration.” The sky flowers were designed to “evoke the appearance of a flower-print Hawaiian shirt,” according to Pittenger.
