The Super Bowl is the National Football League’s annual championship game (NFL). Since 1966, it has replaced the NFL Championship Game as the last game of each NFL season. The game has been held on the first Sunday in February since 2004. The Vince Lombardi Trophy, named for the namesake coach who won the first two Super Bowl games, is presented to the winning club. Non-sponsoring companies commonly refer to the Super Bowl as the “big game” or other generic names since the NFL restricts the use of its “Super Bowl” trademark.

The game was born out of a 1966 merger deal between the NFL and the rival American Football League (AFL) to pit their top teams against each other for a championship. It was previously known as the AFL–NFL World Championship Game until Super Bowl III in 1969, when the term “Super Bowl” was chosen. The first four Super Bowls were held before the merger, from 1967 through 1970, with the NFL and AFL each winning two.

Following the merger in 1970, the American Football Conference (AFC) was created by the 10 AFL clubs and three NFL teams, while the National Football Conference (NFC) was formed by the remaining 13 NFL teams (NFC). Since Super Bowl V in 1971, all games have been between the best teams from each conference, with the NFC leading the AFC 26–25.

Twenty (11 NFC, 9 AFC) of the NFL’s current 32 clubs have won a Super Bowl, while 14 (8 AFC, 6 NFC) have multiple championships. The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC both have six Super Bowl victories, and the Patriots have had the most appearances at 11.

The Patriots and the Denver Broncos of the AFC share the record for most Super Bowl losses with five apiece. The AFC’s Baltimore Ravens and the NFC’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only teams to go unbeaten in multiple Super Bowls, each winning two. The AFC’s Cleveland BrownsHouston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the NFC’s Detroit Lions are the only four clubs that have never played in a Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl is one of the most popular athletic events globally, with the highest audience of all American broadcasts throughout the year. The Super Bowl is the most viewed yearly athletic event globally, second only to the UEFA Champions League final, and the Super Bowl is one of the top seven most-watched broadcasts in American television history. With an audience of 114.4 million people, Super Bowl XLIX was the most-watched American television program in 2015, marking the fifth time that the event established a viewership record in six years.

Because of the vast viewing, commercial airtime during the Super Bowl broadcast is the most costly of the year, leading to corporations producing their most expensive commercials for this broadcast regularly. Commercial viewership is an essential component of the event. After Thanksgiving Day, the Super Bowl is the second-largest day for food consumption in the United States.
