A taxicab, often known as a taxi or cab, is a form of vehicle for hire with a driver that is typically used by a single passenger or small group of people for non-shared rides. A taxicab carries customers between locations of their choice. This varies from public transportation, where the service provider determines the pick-up and drop-off sites rather than the customers; however, demand-responsive transportation and share taxis give a hybrid bus/taxi method.

Automobiles are commonly used to offer taxi services, but in certain countries, human-powered vehicles (such as the rickshaw or pedicab) and animal-powered vehicles (such as the Hansom cab) or even boats (such as water taxis or gondolas) are also used or have been used in the past. It is not unusual for luxury automobiles such as Mercedes-Benz to be the taxicab of choice in Western Europe, Bissau, and, to a lesser extent, Australia. This decision is frequently based on the perceived reliability of the car and the warranty that comes with it. These taxis are nearly always equipped with four-cylinder turbodiesel engines and minimal levels of equipment, and they are not regarded as luxury vehicles. This has changed in nations like Denmark, where tax regulations make it lucrative to sell automobiles after a few years of service, requiring the vehicles to be well-equipped and maintained.

Hiring

Most areas enable a cab to be “hailed” or “flagged” as it approaches on the side of the road. A taxi stand is another possibility (sometimes also called a “cab stand,” “hack stand,” “taxi rank,” or “cab rank”). Taxi stands are commonly seen at airports, train stations, big shopping areas (malls), hotels, and other locations where a significant number of passengers are expected. Taxi stands in certain countries, such as Japan, are organized according to the size of the taxis, with big and small-capacity cabs lining up separately. The cab at the front of the queue is due for the next fare (barring unforeseen circumstances).

Passengers can also request cabs from a central dispatch bureau. Private hire cars can only be hired via the dispatch office in some jurisdictions, and each fare must be allocated by the dispatch office by radio or phone. Picking up customers off the street in certain places might result in the driver’s taxi license being suspended or revoked, as well as prosecution.

Other regions may combine the two systems, allowing drivers to respond to radio requests while simultaneously collecting street fares.

Passengers can also use smartphone applications to hire taxicabs. Despite the fact that the cabs are not directly connected to the call center, the dispatcher nevertheless keeps an eye on them via GPS tracking.
