Telegram is a cloud-based, cross-platform instant messaging (IM) service. End-to-end encrypted video calling, VoIP, file sharing, and other capabilities are also available. It was released on 14 August 2013 for iOS and in October 2013 for Android. Telegram’s servers are dispersed globally to reduce data burden, with five data centers in various countries and an operations center in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Official apps for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux are among the client apps available for desktop and mobile platforms (although registration requires an iOS or Android device and a working phone number). There are also two official Telegram web twin applications ” WebK and WebZ ” and a slew of unauthorized Telegram clients. Except the server, which is closed-sourced and proprietary, all of Telegram’s official components are open source.

End-to-end encrypted phone and video conversations, as well as optional end-to-end encrypted “secret” chats, are available through Telegram. Cloud conversations and groups are encrypted between the app and the server, preventing ISPs and other network third parties from seeing data. Only the Telegram server has access to data.

Users may exchange text and voice messages, conduct voice and video conversations, and share an unlimited amount of photos, documents (2 GB per file), user locations, animated stickers, contacts, and audio files, among other things. Telegram exceeded 500 million monthly active users in January 2021. In January 2021, it was the most downloaded app globally, with 1 billion downloads as of late August 2021.

Brothers Nikolai and Pavel Durov founded Telegram in 2013. The pair previously established the Russian social network VK, which they quit in 2014 when President Putin’s friends took it over. After defying government pressure, Pavel Durov sold his remaining interest in VK and fled Russia. Nikolai Durov designed the MTProto protocol, which serves as the messenger’s foundation, while Pavel Durov’s Digital Fortress fund provided financial and infrastructural assistance. Telegram Messenger claims that its ultimate objective isn’t to make money, although it isn’t set up as a non-profit.

Telegram is a British Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) and an American Limited Liability Company (LLC). It does not reveal where it rents offices or whose legal companies it employs to rent them, citing the necessity to “guard the team from undue influence” and users from government data demands as justifications.

Between 2014 and early 2015, the service was based in Berlin, Germany, according to Pavel Durov, but the team was forced to relocate after failing to secure residence permits for everyone on the team. After leaving Russia, Pavel Durov is believed to have moved from country to country with a small group of computer programmers consisting of 15 core members. Telegram has workers in Saint Petersburg, according to news sources. As of 2017, the Telegram team is situated in Dubai. Users may report app bugs and suggest development ideas on the specialized “Bugs and Suggestions” portal.

Telegram stated on April 24, 2020 that it has achieved 400 million monthly active users. Durov claimed in a blog post on January 8, 2021 that Telegram has achieved “around 500 million” monthly active users.

Telegram got approximately 70 million new members on October 5, 2021, due to a Facebook and its affiliates outage.
