Tequila is undoubtedly the national drink of Mexico. The history of tequila’s beginnings symbolizes a rich heritage that dates back to 900 years. The ancient Aztecs used a variant of tequila, which was consumed during religious ceremonies and celebrations. Other variations of tequila have been produced in central Mexico for hundreds of years.

The source of tequila is the agave plant. It is part of the lily family and has long thorny leaves and a pineapple-like center (often called piña). The center pulp is used in the production of various fermented spirits. The Aztecs made a sweet drink from the agave plant’s center, which made a libation called Pulp (named after the pulp made from the agave plant). This drink is said to be the first fermented drink in North America. Archaeologists and historians have found evidence that ancient peoples used the agave plant and that it has been cultivated in Mexico for thousands of years.

Tequila was originally produced in the 16th century in central Mexico. When the Spanish arrived in 1521 and ran out of brandy, they used agave and distilled the first agave plant drink of agave. This laid the foundation for modern tequila making.

Modern tequila was mass-produced in the 1800s in Guadalajara, Mexico. 1800 Tequila is promoted these days to celebrate the year of production of aged tequila.

In 1873, the first load of tequila was imported into the United States at El Paso, Texas. One hundred years later, crate sales have exceeded one million in the United States alone. Today, Research International studies show that revenues from tequila sales in the United States last year increased 11% to $1.06 billion, according to figures from the Distilled Spirits Council. More telling, while overall volume sales have increased by 20.6% in the past two years, sales of high-end premium brands have increased by 51% over the same period.

Tequila aficionados buy and collect premium brand tequilas so that people buy and collect single malt scotches. Connoisseurs of Tequila today will spend more than 100 US dollars on a single bottle of tequila. The perception of tequila in the United States is changing as this spirit’s popularity continues to grow. Tequila is no longer relegated to drunk nights or Mexican restaurants. The demand for premium tequila will continue to grow as consumers become more informed about this historic drink, which was the first spirit produced in North America.
