Tesla, Inc. produces the Model S, an all-electric five-door liftback. On June 22, 2012, it was first launched. In June 2021, it was given a significant makeover. The Model S is Tesla’s flagship model.

The Model S was the first electric car to dominate the monthly new-car sales rankings in any country in 2013, topping the charts in Norway twice (in September and December 2013) and Denmark once (in December 2015). In September 2018, sales surpassed 250,000 units. In 2015 and 2016, the Model S was the best-selling plug-in electric car in the world, however it was eventually surpassed by the Model 3.

In an early evaluation of the Model S, Consumer Reports stated, “This automobile outperforms anything else we’ve ever examined. Let me say that again: the greatest automobile, not merely the finest electric car. It performs almost everything well.” Owners have regularly ranked Teslas at or near the top of their Owner Satisfaction survey. The 2013 Tesla Model S was selected “Car of the Year” by Motor Trend for the first time in the magazine’s 70-year history in 2019.

Before its debut, the Model S was codenamed WhiteStar. On June 30, 2008, it was formally announced. On March 26, 2009, the prototype car was unveiled. On April 8, 2009, Tesla’s Menlo Park store had an exclusive premiere.

Tesla stated in May 2010 that the Model S will be manufactured at the old NUMMI facility in Fremont, California, which became known as the Tesla Factory.

At the formal launch on June 22, 2012, the first 10 clients received their automobiles at the Fremont facility. In August 2012, production increased from 15″20 automobiles per week to about 1,000 cars per week in 2015.

The base model’s range according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2012 was 208 miles (335 kilometers), while the longer range model’s range was 265 miles (426 km). Musk stated that the Model S battery has double the energy density of the Nissan Leaf’s and more than twice the range, thanks to a low drag coefficient, high motor efficiency, and low rolling resistance.

The original battery was similar to Panasonic’s NCR18650B cell, which had a 265 Wh/kg energy density. Battery prices are anticipated to be between 21 and 22 percent of the car’s cost, according to analysts. The 60 kWh battery had an eight-year warranty or 125,000 miles (200,000 km), whereas the 85 kWh had an eight-year warranty and unlimited mileage. Tesla started developing a network of 480-volt charging stations, known as Tesla Superchargers, in 2012 to help with long-distance driving.

A Nvidia Tegra 3 3D Visual Computing Module (VCM) powered the Center Display, while a second Nvidia Tegra 2 VCM powered the instrument cluster. The Tegra system on a chip (SoC) included a multi-core ARM CPU, a GPU, dedicated audio, video, image processors, and a multi-core ARM CPU.

The Tesla Model S was named World Green Car of the Year in 2013, Motor Trend Car of the Year in 2013, Automobile magazine’s Car of the Year in 2013, Time Magazine’s Best 25 Inventions of the Year in 2012, and Consumer Reports’ best-scoring car in road testing. The Model S was voted the Car of the Century by Car and Driver in 2015. Consumer Reports moved the Model S to its recommended list one year after not recommending it in 2015 owing to poor dependability.
