The Great Wall of China is the most important symbol of China, which has today become one of the best known artificial constructions in the world. This structure has contributed to the development of Chinese history and continues to play a major role in the cultural and tourist development of China.

  • Address: Huairou District, China
  • Length: 21.19618 million m
  • Diameter: 21.19618 million m
  • Size: 21,196 km (13,171 mi)

Traveling to China without visiting the Great Wall is like accomplishing anything, which is why many people want to start their China tour itinerary in Beijing. Besides the historic atmosphere of Beijing, it is the best city in China to visit the Great Wall.

A brief history of the Great Wall tells us that it was built over two thousand years ago to protect agricultural land from invasion. The wall was built in sections over the years by peasants, villagers, and prisoners, which also reflects the reason why different sections of the wall present different looks due to the types of materials used in construction. These materials varied from grass, stones, earth, and wood. Although construction of the wall began in the early seventh century B.C., it was later during the Qin dynasty; the sections were further built and renovated to become an entire structure. It was the period when China got its English name from the word “Qin” pronounced as “Chin.”

Today, the Great Wall of China stretches over 6,700 kilometers winding through the hills, cliffs, plateaus, and deserts of the entire east coast in northwest China.

Currently, nine sections of the wall are open to tourists from around the world, including sections of the Liaoning Wall, sections of Hebei, sections of Tianjin, Beijing, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and Gansu sections. However, among all these sections, the most visited are the sections of the Wall in Beijing; this is because the wall is well preserved and highlights the remains of the Ming dynasty, a time when the wall was under extraordinary construction. The main sections of the Great Wall of Beijing are Badaling, Simatai, Jinshanling, Mutianyu, Gubeikou, Huanghuacheng, and Jiankou.

The Badaling section is famous for its imposing structures, its entirety, and the famous Juyonguan Pass. Most of the pictures of the great wall published in the guides were taken in the Badaling section of the Great Wall. The Mutianyu section also offers great visual pleasure to tourists.
