The Simpsons is an American animated sitcom created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series is a satirical portrayal of working-class life as embodied by the Simpsons, consisting of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie. The show takes place in the fictional town of Springfield and parodies American culture and society, television, and people’s living conditions.

The family was conceived by Groening shortly before a solicitation for a series of animated shorts with producer James L. Brooks. Groening created a dysfunctional family and named the characters members of his family, replacing Bart with his own name; he thought Simpson was a funny name because it contained the word “simp” in it, which was short for “simpleton.” The shorts became part of the Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. After three seasons, the sketch was developed into a half-hour prime time show and became the first Fox episode to enter the top 30 ratings of the season (1989-1990).

Since its debut on December 17, 1989, the 684 series of The Simpsons has aired. It is the longest running American sitcom and longest running American scripted in prime time television series, both by season and episode count. The feature length film, The Simpson movie was released worldwide on July 27, 2007 and grossed over $527 million. The video game was released on October 30, 2007. The Simpsons was renewed on February 6, 2019 for the thirty-first and thirty-second seasons. The first began broadcasting on September 29, 2019 and ended on May 17, 2020; the latter will include the 700th episode. The Simpsons is a co-production of Gracie Films and 20th Television.

The Simpsons gained acclaim during its first nine or ten seasons, which is generally regarded as a “golden age,” although it has since been criticized for its perceived decline in quality. Time named it the best television series of the 20th century, and Erik Adams of The A.V. Club called it “television’s crowning achievement regardless of format”. On January 14, 2000, The Simpsons were honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Since debuting on the series, it has won dozens of awards, including 34 Primetime Emmy Awards, 34 Annie Awards, and 2 Peabody Awards. Homer’s exclamation catchphrase “D’, oh!” was adopted in English, while The Simpsons influenced many other later animated sitcoms for adults.

The Simpsons are known for their wide ensemble of main and supporting characters (ensemble cast).

The main characters are the Simpson family who live in the fictional “Middle America” town of Springfield. Homer, the father, worked as a safety inspector at the Springfield nuclear power plant, contrary to his reckless and noisy nature. He is married to Marge Bouvier, a stereotypical American housewife and mother.
