TikTok is a video social networking app for iOS and Android designed to create and share short, comedic and talent videos. The app was launched in 2017 by ByteDance for markets outside of China. Earlier, ByteDance released Douyin for the Chinese market in September 2016. TikTok and Douyin used the same software, but maintained separate networks to comply with Chinese censorship restrictions. The application allows users to create short music and video for lip synchronization from 3 to 15 seconds and a short looping videos from 3 to 60 seconds. It is the leading short video platform in Asia, the USA and other parts of the world. TikTok is not available in China, and its servers are located in countries where the application is available.

In 2018, the application gained popularity and became the most downloadable application in the United States in October 2018. Since 2018, it has been available in more than 150 markets and in 75 languages. In February 2019, TikTok and Douyin together carried out a billion downloads worldwide, with the exception of Android installations in China.


Douyin was launched by ByteDance in China in September 2016. Douyin was developed in 200 days and has received 100 million users within a year, watching more than 1 billion videos every day. TikTok enters the international market in September 2017. January 23, 2018 TikTok ranked first among free downloads of mobile applications in app stores in Thailand and other countries.

TikTok has been downloaded about 80 million times in the United States and 800 million times worldwide, according to data from Sensor Tower, a mobile research firm that excludes Android users in China. Celebrities, including Jimmy Fallon and Tony Hawk, joined the app in November 2018.

Merging with musical.ly

On November 9, 2017, TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, spent up to $1 billion to purchase musical.ly a startup based in Shanghai with an office in Santa Monica, California, with a popular social network focused on the youth market in the United States. Looking forward to using the young consumer base of the digital platform in the United States. On August 2, 2018, TikTok teamed up to create a larger video community with existing accounts and consolidated data.

Musical.ly was a social networking video platform that allows users to create short video syncs and comedy videos. Its official release was August of 2014.
