Ultron is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is best recognized as an nemesis of the superhero group The Avengers and its quasi-family relationship with its creator Hank Pym. He was the first Marvel Comics character to master the fictional metal alloy adamantium.

Ultron has been voiced by Tom Kane and Jim Meskimen in several media adaptations. The character is played by James Spader in The Avengers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in Age of Ultron (2015).

Ultron originally appeared as an unnamed character in Avengers #54 (1968), and his first full appearance in Avengers #55 (1968). Ultron was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema. Thomas, who admitted it was difficult for him to name the characters, said he liked the -tron suffix and went from there. Thomas said that the idea for the character and his appearance is largely based on Makino, a little-known robot villain who appeared in the Captain Video comic book. He liked the robot’s malicious looking smile showing this to Buscema.

The crossover story Age of Ultron 2013 includes a post-apocalyptic future in which Ultron took over the world and destroyed most of the world’s superheroes. After Wolverine and Invisible Woman attempt to escape this timeline by killing Hank Pym prior to Ultron’s creation, Wolverine’s deteriorating future prompts Wolverine to return and stop his past to kill Pym instead of suggesting Pym to inject a command code into Ultron that will allow Pym turn off the robot when it reaches a certain level of development.
