Umbrella, as we know it today, is mainly a device to keep people dry in the rain or snow. Its original purpose was to shade people from the sun, a feature that is still reflected in the word “umbrella” (derived from the French parare “to protect” and sol “sun”) the smaller size of the umbrella used mainly by women.

Materials used for the manufacture of umbrellas, of course improved over the years.
