Usain St Leo Bolt, OJ, CD (born August 21, 1986) is a retired Jamaican sprinter widely regarded as the best of all time. He has world records in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and 4 x 100-meter relay.

Bolt, an eight-time Olympic gold medalist, is the first sprinter to win the Olympic 100 m and 200 m titles three times in a row (2008, 2012, and 2016). He also won two gold medals in the 4 x 100 relay. He became famous across the globe after winning two world records at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, making him the first individual to hold both marks since fully automatic timing became necessary.

With the exception of a 100 m false start in 2011, he won successive World Championship gold medals in the 100 m, 200 m, and 4 x 100 m relay from 2009 to 2015. He is the World Championships’ most successful male athlete. Bolt is the first athlete to win four World Championship championships in the 200 meters and has three World Championship wins in the 100 meters.

Bolt broke his second 100 m world record of 9.69 seconds in 2009 with a time of 9.58 seconds, the largest improvement since electronic timing began. He has twice set the world record for the 200 meters, with times of 19.30 in 2008 and 19.19 in 2009. He has helped Jamaica establish three world marks in the 4 x 100-meter relay, the most recent of which was set in 2012 in 36.84 seconds. The 200 m is Bolt’s most successful event, with three Olympic and four World titles. He had previously won several 200 m medals (including 2007 World Championship silver) and held the world under-20 and world under-18 records for the race until Erriyon Knighton overtook him in 2021.

His accomplishments as a sprinter have earned him the moniker “Lightning Bolt” in the media, and he has received numerous awards, including the IAAF World Athlete of the Year, Track & Field Athlete of the Year, BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year (three times), and Laureus World Sportsman of the Year (four times). Bolt announced his retirement after finishing third in his final solo 100 m event, opting out of the 200 m, and pulling up in the 4100 m relay final at the 2017 World Championships.

Bolt was born on August 21, 1986, in Sherwood Content, Jamaica, to parents Wellesley and Jennifer Bolt. Sadiki is his brother, while Sherine is his sister. “When I was young, I didn’t really think about anything other than athletics,” Bolt later said. His parents owned the local grocery shop in the rural region, and Bolt spent his time playing cricket and football in the street with his brother. Bolt attended Waldensia Primary School as a kid, where he first demonstrated his sprinting ability when he competed in his parish’s annual national primary school competition.

By the age of twelve, Bolt had established himself as the school’s quickest 100-meter runner. Bolt has also acquired a fondness for Real Madrid and Manchester United, two European football teams.
