V is the 22nd letter in the current English alphabet and the ISO basic Latin alphabet. The letter V comes from the Semitic letter Waw and the modern letters F, U, W and Y.

In Greek, the letter “Y” was adapted from waw to the original presentation of the vovel [u] as in “moon”. This was later fronted to [y], the front rounded vowel spelled ‘ü’ in German.

In English, V is unusual because it does not traditionally doubled to indicate a short vowel, such as P doubled, to show the difference between “divvy up” and “supper”. However, this is changing with the help of newly formulated words, such as “forking” and skivvies. Like J, K, Q, X and Z, V is not used very often in English.

This is the sixth most frequently used letter in English with a frequency of about 1.03% in words. V is the only letter that cannot be used to to form an English two-letter word in the Australian version of the game of Scrabble. C also cannot be used in the US version.
