VAIO Corporation is a Japanese computer company with headquarters in Azumino, Nagano Prefecture (laptops).

VAIO was first presented in 1996 as a Sony brand. In February 2014, Sony sold its PC business to Japan Industrial Partners as part of a reorganization move to focus on mobile devices. Sony owns a minority ownership in the new, independent firm, which sells computers in the US, Japan, India, and Brazil and has an exclusive marketing agreement with Sony. The VAIO brand and logo are still protected by Sony’s intellectual property rights. Trans Cosmos America, Inc. now sells VAIO business products in the United States.

Although Sony developed computers solely for the Japanese market in the 1980s, the corporation exited the computer business at the start of the 1990s. The PCV series of desktops marked Sony’s return to the worldwide computer industry under the new Vaio brand in 1996, with the PCV-90 being developed with a 3D graphical interface as a novelty for new customers. In 1997, the first generation of Vaio laptop computers were produced, with the US$2,000 PCG-505 model being meant to be “SuperSlim” and contained in a four-panel magnesium body.

Steve Jobs showed Sony officials with a Vaio PC running MacOS in 2001, indicating the possibilities of collaboration. Because the popularity of the Windows-based premium PC brand was expanding, Sony’s Vaio team finally turned down the suggestion as a “diversion of resources.”

Sony Vaio’s most recent designs were introduced amid a period of low PC sales, and included models with unique features including magnetic stands and the Vaio Tap, which had a fully separate keyboard. The Windows 10 operating system was added to the most recent models.

Vaio committed to sell their products in Brazil through a relationship with local manufacturer Positivo Informática on October 16, 2015.

Sony said on February 4, 2014 that it will sell its Vaio PC division owing to weak sales. Japan Industrial Partners announced the purchase of the Vaio business in March 2014.

On July 1, 2014, the deal was completed, and the business introduced new entries in the VAIO Fit and Pro lines on the same day. The re-launched items were first sold in Japan, and then in Brazil. Vaio announced plans to re-enter foreign markets in August 2015, starting with Brazil and the United States.

Vaio CEO Yoshimi Ota indicated that the firm intends to focus more on high-end goods in specialist categories (such as the creative industries), since they believe Sony is overly focused on gaining a huge market share in its PC business.

On October 5, 2015, the Canvas Z tablet was introduced in the United States through the Microsoft Store and the Vaio website.
