Willard Carroll Smith Jr. is an actor, rapper, and film producer from the United States. Smith has won four Grammy Awards and has been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards and two Academy Awards.

He rose to prominence as a rapper under the moniker the Fresh Prince in the late 1980s. When he began acting in the NBC television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990, his fame skyrocketed, lasting six seasons until 1996. Smith moved from television to cinema when the series finished, and went on to appear in a number of blockbuster films, including Independence Day (1996) and Men in Black (1999). (1997). Smith was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 25, 1968, to Caroline (née Bright), a Philadelphia school board administrator, and Willard Carroll Smith Sr., a member of the United States Air Force and a refrigeration engineer. He was reared as a Baptist in West Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood. Pamela, his older sister, and Harry and Ellen, twins, are his younger siblings. Smith went to a private Catholic primary school in Philadelphia called Our Lady of Lourdes. His parents split up when he was 13 years old, but did not divorce until about 2000.

Overbrook High School was Smith’s alma mater. Smith reportedly turned down a scholarship to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), but he never applied to college because he “wanted to rap,” according to reports.
