Willard Carroll Smith Jr. is an actor, rapper, and film producer from the United States. Smith has won four Grammy Awards and has been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards and two Academy Awards.

He rose to prominence as a rapper under the moniker the Fresh Prince in the late 1980s. When he began acting in the NBC television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990, his fame skyrocketed, lasting six seasons until 1996. Smith moved from television to cinema when the series finished, and went on to appear in a number of blockbuster films, including Independence Day (1996) and Men in Black (1999). (1997). He is the only actor to have starred in eight consecutive films that grossed more than $100 million at the box office in the United States, eleven consecutive films that grossed more than $150 million internationally, and eight consecutive films that opened at the top of the box office in the United States.

Smith was voted the most bankable celebrity in the world by Forbes in 2013. In April 2007, Newsweek dubbed him “Hollywood’s most powerful actor.” As of 2014, 17 of the 21 films in which he played a starring part had grossed more than $100 million worldwide, with five of them grossing more than $500 million. His films have grossed $7.5 billion at the global box office as of 2016. Smith was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayals as boxer Muhammad Ali in Ali (2001) and stockbroker Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happiness (2006).

Smith was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 25, 1968, to Caroline (née Bright), a Philadelphia school board administrator, and Willard Carroll Smith Sr., a member of the United States Air Force and a refrigeration engineer. He was reared as a Baptist in West Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood. Pamela, his older sister, and Harry and Ellen, twins, are his younger siblings. Smith went to a private Catholic primary school in Philadelphia called Our Lady of Lourdes. His parents split up when he was 13 years old, but did not divorce until about 2000.

Overbrook High School was Smith’s alma mater. Smith reportedly turned down a scholarship to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), but he never applied to college because he “wanted to rap,” according to reports. Smith claims he was accepted into MIT’s “pre-engineering program” for high school students, but he never enrolled.

Smith began his career as the MC of the hip-hop combo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, alongside turntablist and producer Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes, a boyhood friend. Townes and Smith met by happenstance in 1985, when Townes was performing at a house party a few doors down from Smith’s and was without his hype man. Smith made the decision to fill in. When Townes’ hype guy arrived at the party, he was disappointed since they both felt great chemistry.

After that, the two agreed to team together. Smith sought the help of a buddy, Clarence Holmes (Ready Rock C), as the group’s beatboxer, becoming a trio. When A&R man Paul Oakenfold introduced them to Word Up with their single “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble,” a tale of hilarious misadventures that landed Smith and his former DJ and rap partner Mark Forrest (Lord Supreme) in trouble, Smith and his former DJ and rap partner Mark Forrest (Lord Supreme) in trouble, Smith and his former DJ and rap partner Mark Forrest (Lord Supreme) in trouble. The theme tune from “I Dream of Jeannie” was sampled in the song. Smith became recognized for his lighthearted story-telling raps and capable “fight” rhymes that were clean of profanity. A month before Smith graduated from high school, the single became a smash.
