Have you ever wondered why there are so many different glasses? Well, this is not just a stylistic difference. Each form serves a different purpose in your wine tasting experience.

The right choice of glass for true wine connoisseurs is determined by the type of grape you want to drink. Each grade requires a slightly different shape of glass in order to reveal its unique characteristics. The glass from you drink tells you what kind of wines your drink.

The shape of your glass is designed to maximize flavors, aromas and the overall development of the wine variety when it opens into your glass. Let’s look at some of the main varieties of glasses and how their shape affects your drinking experience.

Red Wine Glasses

Red wine glasses have a rounder fuller bowl with a larger opening, which allows the red wine to have enough space to reveal the aroma and aromatic characteristics. Complex aromas and aromas of red wine require an additional surface so that the wine comes in contact with a lot of air.

The two main types of glasses are Bordeaux and a Burgundy. The bowl of a Bordeaux glass is not very large, but has a taller stem. It is the perfect goblet for big bodied red wines such as Merlot and Cabernet varietals. The height of the glass allows the wine to move directly to the back of your taste for maximum taste.

A Burgundy glass is more suitable for Pinot Noir – a lighter full-bodied wine. A glass of burgundy wine is shorter, but has a more rounded bowl than a glass of burgundy. This directs the wine to the tip of the tongue so you can enjoy its delicate taste.

White Wine Glasses

White wine glasses have a higher “U-shaped” bowl. This vertical design allows the release of flavors while maintaining a lower temperature. With white wine, your glass will depend on the age and flavors of the wine. A younger crisp wine is more convenient in a wine glass with a large opening to direct the wine to the side and tip of the tongue. This is where you can enjoy the sweetness of the drink.

Champagne Glasses

For champagne (or sparkling wine), the vertical and narrow flute is recognized by your traditional glass. This design allows you to save carbonation and capture the flavor. If you prefer sweet or coarse (dry) champagne, you can use the same glass. However, the flute tends to feel the look at the top, which makes it slightly different from a traditional champagne glass.

As you can see, your glass can shape the experience of a bottle. Your personal preferences in size and shape should not match your own diversity. When entertaining at home, we think that there are no rules except having good wine, good food, and good company.
