World Cancer Day is an international day marked February 4 to raise awareness of cancer and encourage prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer. World Cancer Day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the 2008 World Cancer Declaration. The main purpose of World Cancer Day is to reduce illness and death caused by cancer significantly. It is an opportunity to rally the international community to end the unjustness of preventable cancer suffering. The United Nations notice this day.

World Cancer Day targets misinformation, raises awareness and reduces stigma. World Cancer Day has several initiatives to show support to people affected by cancer. One of these moves is #NoHairSelfie. This is a global movement in which “hairticipants” physically or virtually shave the head to show people who are being treated for cancer a symbol of courage. Participant images are shared across social media. There are hundreds of events around the world take place.

World Cancer Day was established at the New Millennium, the World Cancer Summit Against Cancer in Paris, on February 4, 2000.

The Charter of Paris Against Cancer, created to promote research, prevent cancer and improve patient service, also includes articles establishing the anniversary of the official signature of the World Cancer Day document. It was signed at the Summit by then UNESCO Secretary-General, Kōichirō Matsuura, and President Jacques Chirac of Paris on February 4, 2000.

The theme of the 2019-2021 campaign is “I Am and I Will.” This theme aims to combat the negative attitude and fateful belief of being unable to do anything about cancer and instead promotes how powerful and impactful our personal actions.

In 2016, World Cancer Day started a three-year campaign under the slogan ‘We can. I can.’, exploring the power of collective and personal actions to reduce the effects of cancer. Before 2016, campaign themes included “Not Beyond Us” (2015) and “Debunk the Myths” (2014).

World Cancer Day is marked by the international cancer community, government, and individuals around the world. Every year, more than 900 activities are held every year in more than 100 countries, and the day itself a trending topic on Twitter.

In recent years, cities have begun to support the day by illuminating important landmarks in orange and blue. In 2019, 55 landmarks in 37 cities joined the landmark lighting initiative.

At least 60 governments officially observe World Cancer Day.
