It is now official. Doctors around the world have undoubtedly proven that laughter is a very powerful medicine. When enjoyed in liberal doses, it has the power to lower stress levels, lower blood pressure, strengthen the immune system, improve appetite and lower blood cholesterol levels.

Dr. Lee Berk of Loma Linda University, California, has been studying this subject for over 20 years and claims that laughing sessions have the same benefits as jogging spells and gym exercises. His lifelong work shows that it has the potential to lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

In one experiment, he took patients with heart disease into two sections. The first group was given the task of watching comedy movies daily for one year. The other, acted as a control group, being free to spend their time however they fancied. At the end of the 12-month trial, only 8% of Marymakers had an additional heart attack, compared to 42% of controls. This is clearly a serious problem. It is not a laughing matter.

Now, previously written about the value of laughter therapy. Especially May 2nd is World Laugh Day established by Dr. Madan Kataria in 1998, not apologize for doing so again. This is a medicine that should be shared with friends. It is cheap, available without a prescription, and has only healthy side effects.

As a contribution to this year’s event, delved into my archive file and found what appears to be one of the oldest jokes recorded. It appears in a book called “Philogero”, which literally means “laughter of love.” This is an anthology of more than 200 gags, some of which date back about 2000 years.

Today we can take advantage of the wall of humor offered 24 hours a day on TV sitcoms, stand-up comics and comedy movies.
