Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman ( born September 1, 1996) is an actress and singer from the United States. She started as a child model and backup dancer before gaining the character of Rocky Blue on the Disney Channel sitcom Shake It Up (2010–2013).

Zendaya competed in the sixteenth season of the reality show Dancing with the Stars in 2013. She produced and appeared in the sitcom K.C. Undercover from 2015 to 2018; then in 2019, she began playing Rue Bennett, a teenage drug addict, in the HBO drama series Euphoria, for which she received critical acclaim as well as Critics’ Choice Award and Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Her film credits include minor appearances in The Greatest Showman (2017) and the superhero blockbusters Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019).

Zendaya began her music career by self-releasing the singles “Swag It Out” and “Watch Me” in 2011, the latter was a duet with Bella Thorne. In 2012, she signed with Hollywood Records and released her debut single, “Replay,” which charted at number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Her self-titled debut studio album was released in 2013 and debuted at number 51 on the Billboard 200 list. The single “Rewrite the Stars,” from The Greatest Showman’s soundtrack, was released in 2018. It charted in the top twenty in the U.K. and Australia, earning platinum and double-platinum certifications in both countries.

Coleman was born in Oakland, California, on September 1, 1996, to Claire Marie (Stoermer) and Kazembe Ajamu (born Samuel David Coleman). On her father’s side, she has five elder half-siblings. Her father is of African-American origin from Arkansas, while her mother is of German and Scottish descent. Zendaya, whose name is derived from the Shona name Tendai, means “to give gratitude,” began her career as a performer at the local California Shakespeare Theater in Orinda, where her mother works as the house manager. She also received training at the theater’s student conservatory. She starred as Little Ti Moune in Once on This Island at the Berkeley Playhouse and as the male part Joe in Caroline, or Change at Palo Alto’s TheaterWorks while attending Oakland School for the Arts.

Zendaya joined Future Shock Oakland, a hip-hop and hula dance company when she was eight years old and was a three-year member.

She attended the American Conservatory Theater and the CalShakes Conservatory Program. Richard III, Twelfth Night, and As You Like It by William Shakespeare are among her other theatre credits.
