Wave energy, also known as ocean wave power, is another type of ocean-based renewable energy source that uses wave power to generate electricity. The Earth was not called the “blue plant” without good reason. Almost three quarters of the plant is covered with water, so it is natural that the search for a clean and renewable source of energy leads us to the oceans that surround us. Using potential energy stored in the oceans and seas to generate electricity ensures that the electricity produced will be pollution-free. The use of wave power and ocean currents is not new, as the energy of waves, tides and hydroelectricity has been used for thousands of years. What is new, however, is the way in which we now harness, store and generate electricity from it.

The use of energy that can be produced by ocean waves is not easy because the oceans of the world are obviously vast. But these oceans contain a huge amount of usable energy that just needs to be tapped. It is enough to go back a few years to the tsunami in Japan to understand it. While it is clear that there is a lot of energy present in the oceans and seas, the question is whether we can convert this stored energy into a continuous renewable energy source. The answer is that we are already starting to do it.

Unlike tidal energy which uses the ebb and flow of tides, wave energy uses the vertical movement of surface water which produces tidal waves. Ocean waves are full of kinetic energy (movement) as they move around the oceans, and it is this energy that can be used to power a turbine or an electric generator. Wave energy collection is a passive process in which wave energy is automatically converted by turbines. This type of renewable energy source is also environmentally friendly, as it creates no air pollution and has a low carbon footprint.

Although the oscillating motion of waves can be the same around the oceans, there are several different ways of harnessing the energy of moving waves. Wave power converts the periodic up and down motion of ocean waves into electricity by placing equipment on the surface of the ocean that captures the energy produced by wave motion and converts this mechanical energy into electrical energy.
