Hay is grass, legumes, or other herbaceous plants that have been cut and dried for storage as animal feed, especially for cattle, horses, goats, and sheep. However, it is also given to smaller pets, such as rabbits and guinea pigs. Even pigs can eat hay, but they do not digest it as efficiently as herbivores.
Hay can be used as animal feed when there is not enough pasture or rangeland is not enough to feed animals, when grazing is impossible due to the weather (for example, in winter) or when the lush pasture itself is too rich for animal health. This is also given when an animal cannot reach pasture, for example, an animal is kept in a stable, shed or barn.
Commonly used hay plants include herbal mixtures such as timothy, brome, fescue, Bermuda grass, orchard grass, and other species, depending on the region. Hay can also include legumes (alfalfa) and clover (red, white and subterranean). Legumes in hay perfectly cut before pre-bloom. Other pasture types are also sometimes part of the mix, although these plants are not necessarily desirable, as some grains are toxic to some animals.
Oat, barley, and wheat are sometimes cut green and turned into hay for feeding animals; however, they are often used in the form of straw, a by-product for harvesting, where the stems and fallen leaves are baled after the grain is harvested and threshed. Straw is mainly used for animal bedding. Although straw is also used as feed, especially as a source of dietary fiber, it has lower nutritional value than hay.
Low quality hay is dry, bleached and rough. Sometimes hay stored in the outside but will look so externally, but inside the bale they are still be green. Dried, discolored or coarse bale is still edible and provides some nutritional value if it is dry, not moldy, dusty or rotten.
Hay or grass is the basis of the ration for all grazing animals and can provide up to 100% of the necessary animal feed. As a rule, hay is fed to an animal so that it can graze on pasture grass, especially in winter or during drought or other conditions that make grazing inaccessible. Animals that can eat hay differ in the types of grass that are suitable for consumption, how they consume hay, and how they are used. Thus, for different types of animals, hay is required, consisting of plants similar to what they eat during grazing, as well as plants that are toxic for grazing are also toxic if dried in hay.
Most animals eat hay twice a day, morning and evening. However, this schedule is more about the convenience of people, since most grazing livestock naturally consume several meals throughout the day. Some animals, especially those raised for meat, can get enough hay, which they can simply eat all day. Other animals, especially those that are loaded or ride as working animals, are free to eat when they are not working, and they can be given more limited amounts of hay so that they do not get too much fat. The correct amount of hay and the type of hay should differ according to the type. Some animals eat concentrated foods, such as grains or vitamin supplements, in addition to hay. In most cases, hay or pasture feed should be 50% or more by weight of the diet.
