Since the start of World War I, when tanks first appeared, until the present, the United States has produced tanks. Despite several American tank design trials, the first American tanks to enter service were imitations of French light tanks and a heavy tank design developed jointly with the United Kingdom.

Due to the US’s isolationist attitude, limited investment on war materials, and financial situation, there was less progress during the interwar era.

With tanks built for mass manufacturing and dependability during World War II, the US asserted its leadership as the “arsenal of democracy.”

The U.S. has had a significant impact on the doctrine, manufacturing, and design philosophy of tanks and has created some of the most effective tank designs.
