Square produced and created the role-playing video game Chrono Trigger in 1995. It was the first game in the Chrono series, and it was published on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Square’s renowned Final Fantasy series; Yuji Horii, a freelance designer and developer of Enix’s popular Dragon Quest series; and Akira Toriyama, character designer of Dragon Quest and author of the Dragon Ball manga series, comprised the game’s development team.

In addition, the game was developed by Kazuhiko Aoki, Masato Kato authored the most of the plot, and composer Yasunori Mitsuda created the majority of the soundtrack before getting ill and deferring the remaining tracks to Nobuo Uematsu of the Final Fantasy series. The plot of the game revolves around a group of adventurers who travel across time in order to avert a worldwide disaster.

When it was first released, Chrono Trigger was a critical and financial success, and it is widely regarded as one of the best video games of all time. The game’s numerous endings, plot-related side-quests concentrating on character development, innovative fighting system, and rich graphics were praised by Nintendo Power magazine as groundbreaking. By March 2003, Chrono Trigger had sold 2.65 million copies globally, making it the third best-selling game in Japan in 1995.

In Japan, Tose ported a version for the PlayStation in 1999, which was then bundled alongside a Final Fantasy IV port for the North American market as Final Fantasy Chronicles (2001). In 2008, Tose published a significantly improved Chrono Trigger for the Nintendo DS in North America and Japan, and PAL countries in 2009. After approximately a year of sales, the Nintendo DS version had sold 790,000 copies. The game has also been released on i-mode, the PlayStation Network, iOS, Android, and Microsoft Windows.

The gameplay of Chrono Trigger is typical of a role-playing video game. In the game’s two-dimensional environment, which includes diverse woodlands, cities, and dungeons, the player controls the protagonist and his friends. The terrain is depicted from a scaled-down above view on an overworld map, which is used to navigate. Forests, cities, and other such locations are represented as more realistic scaled-down landscapes, in which players may interact with locals to get things and services, solve puzzles and challenges, and fight monsters.

Chrono Trigger’s gameplay differs from those of conventional Japanese RPGs in that many adversaries are visible on field maps or lie in wait to ambush the group, rather than emerging in random encounters. When you make contact with adversaries on a field map, a combat begins right there on the map, rather than on a separate battle screen.

During battle, players and foes can wound targets with physical or magical assaults, and players can utilize items to heal or defend themselves. Each player and opponent has a certain quantity of health points, which are depleted by successful assaults and may be replenished with potions and spells. Except in particular storyline-related encounters that enable or compel the player to lose, when a playable character loses all hit points, they faint; if all of the player’s characters perish in battle, the game terminates and must be restored from a previously saved chapter.

A player can outfit their characters with weapons, armor, helmets, and accessories that give special benefits (such as enhanced attack power or defense against magic) both in and out of battle, and different consumable consumables can be utilized both in and out of battle. Items and equipment can be bought in stores or discovered on field maps, usually in treasure boxes. Players advance through Chrono Trigger’s plot by exploring new locations and battling monsters.
