American professional basketball player Donovan Mitchell Jr., who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), was born on September 7, 1996. He was selected with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft, earning the nickname “Spida”. He has played in four NBA All-Star games.

Mitchell represented the Louisville Cardinals in collegiate basketball, where he was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s (ACC) first team that year. He won the Slam Dunk Contest in 2018 and was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team while a rookie with the Utah Jazz. In 2022, he was transferred from the Jazz to the Cavaliers.

Parents Donovan Sr. and Nicole welcomed Mitchell into the world on September 7, 1996 in Elmsford, New York. His father was a former Minor League Baseball player, and his mother, who is of Panamanian origin, is a teacher. Mitchell was raised around Major League Baseball locker rooms since his father was the director of player relations for the New York Mets.

At the age of seven, he idolized Scott Kazmir, a standout pitcher in the Mets’ minor league system, and later David Wright, who was the subject of the very first poster he ever posted on his wall. Jordan is Mitchell’s younger sibling. He participated in AAU basketball with the New York City-based teams The City and Riverside Hawks. Mitchell was present in 2010 when LeBron James made his decision to sign with the Miami Heat at the Boys &  Girls Club of Greenwich (Conn.) .

Personal Life

Mitchell starred in the Rookie on the Rise documentary and was featured on Slam’s cover during the 2017″18 NBA season. The documentary series tracks Mitchell’s campaign for NBA Rookie of the Year.

In the off-season, Mitchell frequently attends New York Mets games because he is a fan. Donovan Sr., Mitchell’s father, has been a Met for more than 20 years.
