Musk is the co-founder, CEO, and product architect of Tesla, Inc.; the CEO and founder of SpaceX; and the co-founder and CEO of Neuralink and The Boring Company.

Early Life and Education

Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. Musk’s parents divorced when he was 10 years old, and he lived with his father, an engineer, and his mother, a model and dietitian. From a young age, Musk was fascinated by computers and technology, and he began programming when he was just 12 years old.

Musk received his undergraduate degree in economics and physics from the University of Pennsylvania and attended Stanford University to pursue a Ph.D. in applied physics. However, Musk left after just two days to pursue his entrepreneurial ventures.

Philanthropy

Elon Musk has been actively involved in philanthropy and has donated millions of dollars to various causes. In 2010, Musk donated $1 million to the Tesla Science Center, and in 2015, he donated $10 million to the Future of Life Institute to support programs that promote safe artificial intelligence. In 2018, he donated $480,000 to install water filtration systems for clean drinking water in Flint, Michigan.

In 1995, Musk co-founded Zip2, a company that provided business directories and maps to newspapers. The company was sold for almost $307 million in 1999, and Musk used his share of the profit to start X.com, an online payment company. X.com eventually evolved into PayPal, which was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.

With the money he made from PayPal, Musk founded SpaceX ( Space Exploration Technologies Corp) in 2002 with the goal of reducing the cost of space transportation and colonizing Mars. In 2008, SpaceX became the first privately-funded company to send a spacecraft to the International Space Station.
