Fiat Automobiles S.p.A. is an Italian automobile manufacturer, a subsidiary of FCA Italy S.p.A., which is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (formerly Fiat S.p.A.). Fiat Automobiles was founded in January 2007 when Fiat reorganized its automotive business and dates back to 1899 when Fiat’s first car, the Fiat 4 HP, was produced.
Fiat Automobiles is the largest car manufacturer in Italy. Over its more than a century history, it remained the largest car manufacturer in Europe and the third largest car manufacturer in the world after General Motors and Ford for over 20 years, until the auto crisis in the late 1980s. In 2013 Fiat S.p.A. was the second largest automobile manufacturer in Europe and the seventh largest in the world, while FCA is currently the eighth largest automobile manufacturer in the world.
In 1970, Fiat Automobiles in Italy had over 100,000 employees when production in that country reached its highest level of 1.4 million vehicles. By 2002, it had built over 1 million vehicles at six factories in Italy, and the country accounted for more than a third of the company’s revenues. Fiat also manufactures railway engines, military vehicles, agricultural tractors, aircraft and weapons such as the Fiat – Revelli Modello 1914.
Fiat vehicles are manufactured in several locations around the world. Outside Italy, the largest manufacturing country is Brazil, where the Fiat brand is the market leader. The group also has factories in Argentina, Poland and Mexico (where Fiat vehicles are manufactured in factories owned and operated by the US FCA for export to the US, Brazil, Italy and other markets) and a long history of product licensing in other countries.
Fiat Automobiles has received numerous international awards for its vehicles, including nine European Car of the Year awards, most of which were from other manufacturers, and has been awarded the lowest CO emissions on several occasions.
