A forest truck known as a forwarder transports large fallen logs from the stump to a roadside landing. A forwarder, unlike a skidder, transports logs off the ground, reducing soil impact but limiting the size of logs it can transport. In cut-to-length logging operations, forwarders are frequently used in tandem with harvesters.

The ability of a forwarder to carry a load is widely used to classify them. Trailers built for towing behind all-terrain vehicles with a load capacity of 1 to 3 tonnes are the smallest. Agricultural self-loading trailers meant to be hauled by agricultural tractors are capable of carrying loads weighing up to 12 to 15 tonnes.

Commercial logging and early thinning equipment that are light and purpose-built can manage workloads of up to 8 tonnes. Between 12 and 16 tonnes are carried by medium-sized forwarders employed in clearfells and subsequent thinnings.

Clearfells are handled in the biggest class, which can handle up to 25 tonnes. Forwarders also lift their cargo at least 2 feet off the ground.
