The Groot is an extraterrestrial, sentient tree-like creature and monarch of the Planet X. He is one of the founding members of the Star-Lord‘s Guardians of the Galaxy and is known for his long-standing friendship with the Rocket Raccoon.

Origin

Groot is an alien known to Kree as a Floral Colossus. It was initially from Planet X and was thought that his species had been extinct. For the first time, Groot was landed on Earth in his spaceship and began to threaten humanity as one of the Marvel Monsters in the Marvel Age of Monsters. It was his goal to conquer planet Earth. He used several trees from Earth to become his soldier. Groot, however, was soon defeated by an intelligent man who used termites on him. Groot fell to the ground and seemingly perished. He was not heard for many years after his initial encounter with humanity.

Creation

Groot was created by Dick Ayers, Stan Lee, and Jack Kirby and first appeared in Tales To Astonish 13 (1960). Groot has evolved from a (possibly misunderstood) threat to Earth into a friendly guard that protects the innocents. In his first appearances, he could speak, but in the end, he could only say the words “I am Groot.”

The Howling Commandos

Groot was again seen when he was recruited/retained by the Howling Commandos, a unit of SHIELD, which was a team compromised of monster-like heroes. Despite his ability to hide from the appearance of a tree, he was caught because he did not smell like a tree. Groot helped the team of monsters in several missions. Eventually, Groot was freed from the SHIELD custody and returned into Kree space.
