Lacrosse is a team sport in which the players use a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball to play. It is North America’s oldest organized sport, with roots in a tribal game played by indigenous peoples of the Eastern Woodlands and other parts of the continent. European colonizers heavily changed the game to reduce the brutality to develop its present collegiate and professional version.

Carrying, passing, catching, and shooting the ball into the goal are all done with the lacrosse stick’s head. Field lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, box lacrosse, and intercrossed are four variations of the sport with distinct sticks, fields, rules, and equipment. Field (outdoor) and box (indoor) lacrosse are contact sports in which all players wear protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, shoulder pads, and elbow pads.

Body contact is prohibited in the women’s game, although stick-to-stick contact is permitted. Women’s players are simply obliged to wear eye protection, while goalkeepers must wear helmets and protective pads. Intercross is a non-contact, mixed-gender sport played inside using a softer ball and an all-plastic stick.

World Lacrosse is the only international athletic organization that recognizes First Countries bands and Native American tribes as sovereign nations, and it governs the contemporary sport. The men’s World Lacrosse Championship, the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup, the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship for box lacrosse, and the Under-19 World Lacrosse Championships for both men and women are all hosted by the organization.

Every four years, each is held. Lacrosse has been played at the Summer Olympic Games on two occasions, in 1904 and 1908. 1928, 1932, and 1948 Summer Olympics all featured it as a demonstration event.

Lacrosse is based on Native American sports that date back to 1100 AD. Jesuit missionary priests in present-day Canada chronicled a form of lacrosse in the 17th century.

Each team comprised of roughly 100 to 1,000 men on a field that measured several miles (kilometers) in length in the traditional native Canadian version. These games were played for two to three days straight, from sunrise to sunset, as part of a ceremonial ritual, a form of symbolic warfare, or to express gratitude to the Creator or Master.

For long years, lacrosse was an important part of tribes’ social and religious lives across the continent. Early lacrosse was marked by a strong spiritual commitment, which was appropriate given the combative nature of the sport. Participants acted like warriors with the objective of bringing glory and honor to themselves and their clans. “For the Creator,” or “The Creator’s Game,” was supposed to be the game’s purpose.
