Nintendo’s Wii is a home video game console developed and released in 2008. It was initially published in North America on November 19, 2006, and in most other areas in December 2006. Following the GameCube, Nintendo’s fifth major home gaming system and a seventh-generation home console with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata instructed the firm to avoid competing with Microsoft and Sony on computational visuals and power, instead of focusing on new gameplay to appeal to a larger range of gamers. Under the codename Revolution, game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda oversaw the console’s development.

The Wii Remote is the primary controller for the Wii, a wireless controller featuring motion sensing and standard buttons that may be used to aim at the television screen or recognize gestures. The Wii was the first Nintendo system to enable direct Internet access, allowing for online gaming and digital distribution of games and other apps via the Wii Shop Channel.

For some titles, the Wii enables wireless communication with the Nintendo DS portable device. Backward compatibility with the GameCube was incorporated in the first Wii models. Later in its lifespan, two lower-cost Wii versions were released: a redesigned model with the same design as the original Wii but without GameCube compatibility, and the Wii Mini, a small, budget-friendly redesign of the Wii that eliminated even more capabilities, including internet connectivity and SD card storage.

The Wii and its games were less expensive to develop than its competitors due to Nintendo’s lessened focus on processing power. The Wii was a huge hit when it first came out, and certain regions could not get enough of it. Wii Sports, a bundled game, was hailed as the console’s killer app.

Within a year of its release, the Wii outsold all previous seventh-generation consoles, and by 2013, it had sold more than 100 million copies. The Wii has sold over 101 million copies worldwide, making it Nintendo’s best-selling home console and the fourth best-selling home console overall as of 2020.

Nintendo’s Wii placed the company as a major participant in the video game hardware industry. Following the Wii Remote’s debut of motion-controlled games, Microsoft and Sony developed their own rival devices, the Kinect and PlayStation Move, respectively. While the Wii had widened its desired demographics, Nintendo discovered that the core gamer population had spurned the Wii.

The Wii U, the Wii’s successor, attempted to regain the core gamer market by adding new capabilities to the Wii. The Wii U was introduced in 2012, and Nintendo sold both consoles for the rest of the year. Nintendo continued developing and promoting the Wii Mini until 2017 and supplied a subset of the Wii’s online services until 2019.
